Prayer for Encouragement

Prayer for Encouragement

When Job was in desperate need for encouragement, he needed his friends to encourage him.  To their credit his friends did sit with him for a week without saying anything.

Sometimes there are no words that need to be said. Just being there is a comfort to someone in deep despair.

But then the true thoughts of his friends came forth.  Instead of beseeching God for deliverance, they began to find fault.

“My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God.”

Job 16:20

Friends mean well. They want to help but sometimes their comfort seems harsh.

Job found his friends to be miserable company, but that did not stop Job from seeking comfort from the greatest comforter of all, his Saviour.

“O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleadeth for his neighbor!”

Job 16:21

Job did not lose his faith during the greatest trial of his life.  Instead, he drew closer to God than ever before.

“For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:

And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God.”

Job 19:25-26

Life does not always turn out according to our expectations. Job suffered great loss, yet God afterward abundantly rewarded him.  We also will find many blessings if we keep our focus and faith in God above.

O Father, thank You for Your great mercies and love that You show toward us.   When we find ourselves discouraged, may we realize that You and You alone can give the encouragement that we need.

Thank you for your faithfulness to us.  May our faith not rest in people or people’s wisdom and advice, but in You and Your power alone.

No matter in what situation we find ourselves, may we respond with love and kindness. Give us a Christlike attitude and remind us of the great homecoming You are preparing for us in Heaven.  Help us to continue in the faith until that great homecoming day.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

May you be encouraged to know that God loves you.  He has not left you alone.  You can call out to Him at anytime and know that He hears your prayers.

  • Have you ever been discouraged?
  • What did others do that encouraged you the most?

Thank you for commenting on any ideas that will help others to know how to encourage their friends when they need it.

It’s a Psalm 31 Day, A Prayer of Encouragement

May your heart be blessed by God's Word.
May your heart be blessed by God’s Word.

It’s a Psalm 31 Day.

That’s what I felt spoken to my mind today as I started to pray.

So, I opened my Bible to view the day through Scripture. I read the words over and over.

Yes, the Scripture spoke to my heart because a friend of mine is going through a difficult time.

I kept reading the words over and over.

Then I turned the words into a prayer. Maybe some of those words will speak to your heart. Yes, it is a Psalm 31 Day!

In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed:  deliver me in thy righteousness.

Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defense to save me.

For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me.

Pull me out of the net that [those who wish to do me harm] have laid privily for me:  for thou art my strength.

Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.

I have hated [the lying vanities that people speak]: but I trust in [You] Lord.

I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou has considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;

And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.

Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.

For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.

I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbors, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.

I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind:  I am like a broken vessel.

For I have heard the slander of many:  fear was on every side:  while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.

But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God.

My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.

Make thy face to shine upon [me]: save me for thy mercies’ sake.

Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.

Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!

Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man:  thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

Blessed be the LORD:  for he hath shewed me his marvelous kindness in a strong city.

For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes:  nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.

O love the LORD, all ye his saints:  for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.

Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.
